Welcome To WiFi Wealth Insiders
Hey there, Tom here.
I spend a lot of time thinking about side hustles and ways to create WiFi Wealth…
BUT I also spend a lot of time thinking about the point of all of this 😂 I want to be intentional about the kind of life I’m building and what I’m working towards.
It also means thinking about the habits, actions, and lifestyles I don’t want to optimize for.
This is actually incredibly important.
After all, the most dangerous threats to your wealth and freedom aren't the ones you see coming.
They're not recessions. They're not taxes. They're not even 9-to-5 jobs, because plenty of jobs are great.
They're the invisible leaks that quietly drain your time, energy, and money, until one day you realize you've been busy but trapped the whole time.
Here are 8 of them to watch for so you recognize them before they take hold 👇
Free Workshop: Turn a Tiny Audience Into $10k/month
We’ve driven over $10M in revenue for our newsletter clients and are unpacking the plug-and-play system thousands of people are using to turn a small email list into $2k-$10k/month.
(…without needing to quit your job, without needing to get on camera, and without needing prior experience).
We’ll show you how to start a newsletter in <30 minutes, scale to 1,000 readers, and make your first $10,000 in revenue.
8 Things That DESTROY Your Wealth & Freedom
1. Loss aversion and playing it too safe
Most of us feel a loss about twice as hard as we feel an equal gain. Losing $5 stings more than finding $5 feels good, so we go out of our way to avoid the loss instead of chasing the win.
Scale that up to starting a business or a side hustle and it gets expensive. "What if it doesn't make money?" "What if people laugh?"
The fear of losing something (money, status, security) outweighs the excitement of gaining something, so we never try. This is SUCH a shame but it’s absolutely true.
The fix is to zoom out. Seriously. Very few things matter in the grand scheme of things 😂😎
Failing at a business hurts in the short term and might cost you a couple thousand bucks. But over a couple of years, would you rather have risked something and maybe failed, or never risked at all? Inaction is the silent killer here.
2. Lifestyle creep
Your income goes up, and your expenses quietly follow. The fancy dinners, the nicer apartment, the first-class seat "just this once."
Every upgrade comes with invisible chains: bigger bills, more stress, and less flexibility to walk away from anything. That's how people opt in to the corporate hamster wheel for the rest of their working lives.
Money should work for you, not run your life. Before you splurge, ask how much of your life energy you're trading for what you get back.
3. Optimization obsession
Ice baths. Three-hour morning routines. Journaling, manifesting, and posting about it all.
Don't get me wrong, good routines are awesome. But at some point you're spending so much time optimizing your life that you hardly get anything done, and you've squeezed out the spontaneous moments that make it worth living.
The most productive parts of my life have involved waking up early, making coffee, and diving into uninterrupted work. No manifestations. No breathwork. And definitely no ice baths 😂😂
Plus, you need to LIVE a little bit!
Stay up past your bedtime sometimes. Drink the beer at sunset with someone you love. If it's your birthday, have the cake. Some fun along the way won't kill you.
4. Living on borrowed dreams
This might be the sneakiest one, because it's drilled into us from childhood: go to school, get good grades, get a good job, work hard, retire at 65.
That playbook worked for a few generations and still works for some people. But it also keeps you working most of your life, and it doesn't teach financial literacy, risk-taking, or doing anything different from the norm.
What if you don't want to work until 65? What if you want to pack your bags, move to Guatemala, and open a business, or just chill for a while?
I've met so many people with rich, strange lives as a digital nomad, and plenty of them started on the traditional path before forging their own. Do whatever you want with your life. Just don't live someone else's dream and then wonder why you feel empty.
5. The "Someday" syndrome
This one almost cost me years.
I kept saying I'd start my own thing someday. Move abroad someday. Create my freedom someday. Meanwhile I was a recent grad at a marketing agency with zero growth potential, making ads for 8 hours and then going home to watch Netflix until my spirit died.
One day I snapped out of it. Someday is code for never. A month later I was building my freelance writing business and blog from Medellín, Colombia. My income dipped, but not for long, and it turned out to be the best financial decision I ever made.
If you want to start something, don't wait for the timing to be perfect. Do it ugly. Do it rushed. Just stay in motion.
6. Lack of faith
I mean faith in yourself and your abilities, and if it applies to you, faith in God, the universe, or whatever grounding belief keeps you calm when things get chaotic.
Confidence makes risk-taking possible. If you believe you're competent and that things generally work out, you're far more likely to try something new.
School doesn't help much here. It rewards memorizing and repeating what the professor wants to hear, which is how you get graduates with almost no faith in their ability to solve real problems. (I was one of them. Psychology degree, zero real-world confidence…Yikes!)
What changed it for me was trying side hustles and learning skills. Each small win built confidence, which led to more risks, which built more skills, and so on. That's why I'm such a fan of one-person businesses and side projects.
7. Living in toxic environments
Your environment is stronger than your willpower.
If everyone around you coasts, complains, and avoids risk, guess what you'll end up doing? People are slow to change their environments, and I've been guilty of it too, staying in relationships and social circles that were the wrong fit. Burning bridges is hard, but sometimes it's necessary.
This is also why I think travel is worth it, especially if you've never lived outside the city you were born in. Seeing different environments shows you there are other ways to live.
8. An external locus of control
Locus of control is how much you believe you, rather than outside forces, control what happens in your life.
I can't think of one successful, happy person I've met who has a strong external locus of control. The people who build amazing things genuinely believe they're in the driver's seat. The people who blame the system, the economy, or the hand they were dealt rarely get as far.
Here's the funny part 👉 it doesn't even matter who's right. I'd rather go through life believing I control my own fate than wait around for things to magically improve.
The Takeaway:
There are plenty of obvious ways to mess up your life.
What's harder to catch are the silent things that slowly remove your freedom and limit your wealth.
Plenty of people have great jobs and salaries and still have no control over their time or energy. They have golden handcuffs, have zero say over how they spend their time, and are actively building a life they want a vacation from.
This is honestly super normal. We’re told by society to fall into this path to a large extent.
BUT this is why I think it’s important to optimize for your own freedom.
We are in the driver’s seat, and we control the life we are creating.
I'm also still figuring this out myself 😂 But these are the 8 patterns I'm actively working to spot and stop, especially when it comes to having more faith and getting comfortable with certain kinds of risk.
Let me know what you think! Or if there’s any other patterns and habits that people should be cautious of.
