I’m going to take a little trip down memory lane for a moment 😅😅

In 2017, I started trying to make money online for the first time ever.

It went pretty poorly.

I wrote on Hubpages…I built an Amazon affiliate site about headphones that absolutely sucked…I ran a phone farm…My Etsy print-on-demand shop even got shut down over some SpongeBob memes.

None of these ideas ever made more than $25 a month. In fact, most of them lost money.

Then in 2018 I started a blog called This Online World. This was a personal finance journal and place for me to document all of the side hustle ideas I was testing out.

It made $1,700 in its first 12 months after hundreds of hours of work…Not a great ROI 🫠

But just a few years later, and This Online World crossed the $1M revenue mark. The next year I also exited the business and became financially free.

This might sound unbelievable. But in reality, the blog I ended up selling wasn’t that different from the blog I started. And the entire business model was pretty simple.

Most of my revenue actually came came from just three offer types. None of them needed a big ad budget, technical marketing, or industry connections either.

I’m going to explain exactly what these offer types are, why they work, and how you can implement them to begin making more money as well.

I first chased high-ticket affiliate programs, like 5% on a $2,000 sound system. But I knew nothing about audio, and that's a bad reason to be an affiliate in the first place.

What I did know was paid survey sites, reward apps, and the beermoney world. So I tested them and wrote honest reviews. Each post also included some affiliate links for people to try out these products for themselves.

These companies all pay $1 to $5+ per signup, but the friction is nearly zero, since people just enter an email to get started.

💵 I ended up making hundreds of thousands of dollars by promoting these kinds of companies. This took thousands of users and conversions, but again, these CPA offers are so easy to convert on.

But there’s two lessons here:

A few months into blogging, I slapped some AdSense ads on my blog.

These honestly didn’t pay that much. But I’ll admit, there’s something magical about seeing the passive income machine of display ads making you money every day, even if it’s just a cup of coffee or less 😅

But that was AdSense…

Eventually my blog qualified for Mediavine, which is a more premium ads network. At its peak, This Online World was generating about $20,000 per month just in ad revenue.

Organic blog traffic is harder to get now, but display ads are still worth a look (Mediavine's Journey program is easier to qualify for). It’s such an easy monetization stream to add to a content site.

Same goes for video. There’s the YouTube Partner Program and creator monetization programs for Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

I’ve met plenty of people who have become rich from just display advertising or social media creator programs. There is always money in knowing how to capture attention.

When my blogging business started scaling, I started attracting a fair bit of attention from people within my niche…

Affiliate managers, editors, other media companies.

Some of them reached out to partner on various projects. Over the years, I ended up making money with freelance writing, an editorial role, SEO consulting, paid ads retainers, and even helping one organization scout talent and hire.

Yes, freelancing is trading time for money at the end of the day, but that's fine while you're scaling.

Sometimes, you need the consistent cashflow from this kind of thing to support yourself while you work on growing your main business.

When I quit my office job and moved to Colombia, freelance writing kept the lights on while my blog grew.

The best part is freelancing in the same niche you're an affiliate in. You're paid to make content you already know cold. I've seen creators earn $10K a month as the face of a brand, or as social media managers and YouTube strategists. Pitch a professional service to brands you've already worked with.

I write about how to become rich with one-person businesses because I think this is the greatest income opportunity that exists right now.

AND a large part of why I think this is true is because there’s so many models that work.

Affiliate income, display ads, digital products, online coaching, print on demand products, freelancing services, mini agency models…You get the idea.

If you can learn how to generate attention and traffic, monetizing with one (or several) of these offer types is the easy part.

In the meantime, don’t be afraid to research and test some of these monetization options. Again, I’ve found that simple is often best, and you rarely have to reinvent the wheel to start making money online.
