Welcome To Wifi Wealth Insiders
Hey there, Tom here.
In 2020, I was working a dead-end job at a digital marketing agency, making about $40K CAD. Zero upward mobility, two weeks of vacation I had to beg for, and a soul-crushing dread every time I walked into that cubicle.
So…I quit one day.
🌎 A few weeks later I was on a one-way flight to Medellin, Colombia. I had my backpack, some savings, and a plan to go all-in on freelance writing and blogging.
Six months in, my freelance income had already surpassed my old salary.
A few years later I was writing for Forbes, had crossed $1M with my blogging business, and was fully financially free from content on the internet.
Was some of that luck? ABSOLUTELY.
But I'm a firm believer that you build your own luck with a gameplan and the dedication to run it to the ground.
SO I put together a five-phase version of the plan I used to trade my 9-5 job for online income with significantly higher upside and freedom.
This isn’t a fast path. It’s not easy or guaranteed.
BUT this is an actual roadmap that’s realistic that you can use to potentially transform your 9-5 income into self-employment income. Let’s dive in! 👇

The One-Person Business Blueprint - How To Quit Your Job & Go Solo Instead
Phase 1: Build a Financial Foundation
The first mistake people make is assuming this journey starts with earning more. It actually starts with needing less.
If your expenses are $3K/month instead of $7.5K, you've got a completely different (and easier) mountain to climb.
Here are the main steps to take for phase one 👇
Build a 6-month emergency fund in a high-yield savings account you don't touch.
Kill high-interest debt first. If you're carrying credit card debt, don't quit yet; side hustle and pay it down aggressively instead.
Cut lifestyle creep ruthlessly. You're not raising VC money, so live lean!
This phase alone can take months to a year, depending on where you're starting from. But without a solid financial foundation, I wouldn’t quit your job.
Phase 2: Choose One High-Income Skill to Learn
Note: You can absolutely work on phase two while also working through phase one.
This phase is all about building the engine of your future business.
In the beginning, you're trading time for money on this skill until you can build systems around it.
My advice: lean on your current day job to get paid to learn. I picked up SEO and paid ads at my agency job, which directly fed my blog and freelance writing business later.
High-income skills worth considering: paid ads/lead gen, affiliate marketing, ecommerce/CRO, AI automation, high-ticket sales, data science, UX/UI, email marketing, content creation.
If your job involves unskilled labor or nothing transferable, AI automation is probably your best entry point right now. A lot of companies are desperate for it and don't know how to implement it themselves.
Phase 3: Turn Your Skill Into Income
This is where it gets exciting…landing your first paying customers!
There’s many ways to approach this phase. But if your goal is to quit your job and replace that income, here are three realistic routes you can consider:
Freelancing — fastest path to cash. Before I quit my job, I moonlighted nights and weekends pitching clients on LinkedIn. I ended up with 4-5 clients and $2K/month in steady writing work. Not a "business" yet, but it was proof of concept and helped me begin preparing to quit.
Content creation — slower and less predictable, but way higher ceiling. My blog made just $1,700 in year one; a few years later it cleared $500K in a single year before I sold it. This is the route that eventually made me financially free, but it typically takes years to master making money with algorithms.
Productizing — turning your skill into a packaged, repeatable offer (think: freelance ghostwriter → ghostwriting agency). Same work, better positioning, way more upside.
Whichever route, the goal isn't scale yet, it's just proof. Land the first sale. Everything gets easier once you're refining something that already works instead of hoping it will.
Phase 4: Build Your Exit Ramp (and Test It)
By now you should have consistent revenue covering your basics, ideally from a few different sources so you're not dependent on any single client or platform.
If you're hovering around 50%+ of your take-home salary, that's usually a strong enough signal to go all-in. Before you do:
Take a few days off work to simulate full-time focus on the business. If you run out of things to do, your model needs more direction; if you can't keep up, you're on the right track.
Get your admin in order: business bank account, health insurance research, invoicing/taxes sorted.
Line up next steps! This could include more client outreach, a content calendar, a lead list. You need to prepare so you can hit the ground running when you eventually make the leap.
Map out a rough weekly schedule, because no one's assigning you tasks anymore.
Then give notice. Don't burn bridges; you never know when those relationships circle back. But set a date in your calendar and know when you’re going all-in on your new business.
Phase 5: Build Systems & Scale
Most solo operators accidentally trade a 9-5 for a 7-10.
I lived this for years…Practically every family photo from 2020-2024 has me in front of a laptop 😅
The fix is outsourcing as revenue allows.
I started with outsourcing content writing/editing, then YouTube editing and thumbnails, then a VA for sponsorship outreach and invoicing. Nowadays, adding the right AI tools into your workflows saves a massive amount of time and money as well.
This is the 5-step plan I used to quit my dead-end office job. And if you want to read a more comprehensive breakdown, I wrote about this blueprint here in more detail.
One more thing I’ll say however: there's no shame in going back to a job, even after (or during) this whole process.
In 2022 I was burned out, took a 6-figure remote writing gig for 7 months, kept my blog running on the side, learned new skills, made new connections, then quit again once my own thing pulled ahead. Titles don't matter. Making the money you want for the time you're putting in does!
Additionally, most ventures don't work out on the first try. I've had two businesses wiped out by algorithm updates. I've been shadow-banned. I've gone back to the job market more than once out of sheer exhaustion.
None of this is easy. But all of it's worthwhile if you keep testing and building your foundations.
I’m a firm believer that you can build any kind of life you’re dreaming of. It just takes the right blueprint and consistent, positive action 😊

There’s no cookie-cutter solution to launching a business or building solo income.
That said, I hope this blueprint provides a realistic timeline and some examples of how you can achieve this switch.
For some, they might fund success much faster. For others, it could take years and several attempts to launch a one-person business that lasts.
There’s really no guarantees. But I absolutely know that you’ll be in a better spot after trying to build cool stuff than if you sat on the sidelines. The skills and confidence you develop alone are incredibly valuable and can change your life.
